Research theme: Charity history

Here you will find our research into the history of the third-sector, covering the following:

• The 19th Century emergence of the State as an alternative to charity in providing welfare and other public services, and the development of the public/voluntary/private sector relationship in delivering these.
• The development of charities as professional organisations, drawing on private and public sector models of business administration as well as forging their own ways of working.
• The emergence of a campaigning role for charities, advocating and securing change at international, national and local levels in the 20th Century.
